About the Center

The Elrom Center for Air and Space Policy and Strategy is a multidisciplinary center established by Tel Aviv University in collaboration with the Israeli Air Force, in order to harness academic research fields for the development and promotion of an interdisciplinary research infrastructure in the fields of air and space.

The center was launched on December 31, 2021 (27th of Tevet, 5782), based on the approval of the Tel Aviv University Senate from November 11, 2020 (24th of Cheshvan, 5781), and began its operations during 2022.

The center promotes theoretical and applied research with researchers from various academic disciplines, as well as with researchers from the defense establishment in general and the Air Force in particular. The main goals of the center are to serve as a hub of learning and research for researchers and students from various faculties engaged in air and space fields, to institutionalize sustainable academic engagement in Israel regarding air and space policy and strategy, and to develop a reserve of researchers and senior academics whose research deals with various aspects of these topics.

The research activity at the center is conducted through three main channels:

  1. Policy, force build-up, and strategy research, in accordance with work plans across several main axes. The goal of the applied research is to establish research-based thinking, knowledge, and insights within the Air Force.

  2. An academic research fund based on an annual call for proposals for academic research in the research center's field of knowledge, which will be selected by the Head of the Center in accordance with the recommendation of the scientific committee. These studies are intended to create a strong theoretical academic knowledge base over time and increase academic engagement in the fields of air and space.

  3. The journal "Air and Security," which serves as a platform for research-academic discourse alongside applied policy. The studies are written by the center's researchers and renowned researchers from outside the center. Articles are accepted to the journal only after undergoing external peer review by two renowned reviewers in the field, who have reviewed and accepted the final version—a standard similar to that of leading academic journals worldwide.

In addition, the Elrom Center serves as a home for Air Force officers who combine master's degree studies with applied research. The purpose of this component is to create a core of leading, thinking officers based on research capability.
